Our Story

Hear it from our Founder and CEO Judy, and why Cwtch exists.

Meet Judy

Founder & CEO

Cwtch was born from a moment that many people who wear a breast prosthesis will recognise all too well: it’s the moment you realise you have nowhere safe or suitable to store it when you aren’t wearing it. For our founder, Judy, that moment happened while packing for a family holiday.

After her mastectomy in August 2024, she had been wearing a breast prosthesis and adjusting to everyday life with her new routine. But when preparing for a simple trip away, she suddenly realised she didn’t have a practical or protective way to store it in her luggage.

An idea was born

A quick online search offered almost nothing. Only one option existed in the UK, and it looked more like a vintage vanity case than a modern, discreet solution. It was bulky, outdated, and didn’t reflect the dignity or care that prosthesis wearers deserve.

Hoping for better suggestions, Judy turned to her online support group — only to find ideas such as “put it in a sock” or “hang it in an old bra.” These suggestions weren’t just impractical. They were dismissive. They overlooked the emotional and physical journey that women navigate after mastectomy. And in that moment, Judy knew something needed to change. If the right product didn’t exist, she would create it herself.

That is where the idea for Cwtch, a purpose-designed breast prosthesis travel and storage case, began. Born from lived experience and shaped with an award-winning designer, Judy created Cwtch to make life a little easier for others in the same boat.

Our vision for the future

Cwtch is just the beginning. We intend to…

At its heart, Cwtch is more than a case.
It is a message: You deserve products designed with your needs, comfort, and confidence in mind.

Our mission is simple, to provide a stylish, practical solution for storing and travelling with a breast prosthesis — created with empathy and based on lived experience.

Every part of Cwtch is intentional. It isn’t mass-produced without understanding the needs of the people who will use it. It is a product shaped by real life, real challenges, and a deep understanding of its customers.

What “Cwtch” Means

The Welsh word cwtch has two beautiful meanings — a warm, supportive hug and a small safe place to hold something that matters. Both meanings captured exactly what Judy wanted this product to represent: comfort, protection, security, and dignity.

A cwtch isn’t only something you receive. It’s something you give. And every part of the Cwtch case was created to give its owner reassurance and confidence throughout their day.

Why we created a prosthesis travel case

People who wear breast prostheses deserve products created thoughtfully, not as an afterthought. A prosthesis is an important part of many people’s lives emotionally, physically, and functionally.

Cwtch was designed to be:

Small and compact, so it fits naturally in bags, suitcases, or drawers

Protective, using softshell EVA for shock absorption and water resistance

Secure, with an anti-slip interior that holds your silicone prosthesis in place

Aesthetically modern, discreet and beautifully simple

Lightweight and easy to handle so it never feels cumbersome

Fit for purpose, accommodating symmetrical silicone breast prostheses in common sizes

What began as a personal necessity evolved into a product that speaks to thousands of women every year.

In the UK alone, around 55,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually, and many rely on external prostheses either temporarily or long-term.
